You will need to find an intermediary format that will preserve the material data (you can try 3DS,Collada, FBX I think) but be aware of the difference in units and coordinate systems. Open the .mesh.xml files and see if there's a bunch of coordinates inside. Second try importing the .scene with the asset manager instead of .mesh.xml.
